Fine Arts Elective Courses

 

ART I
The student will be exposed to many aspects of visual arts including drawing, painting, sculpture, paper Mache, and many others. Students will explore many styles of art such as abstract, realism, cubism, impressionism, surrealism, and pointillism.  Students will advance in applying the elements of art, principles of design, and sensory and expressive features of visual arts. 
Prerequisite:  High school enrollment
Grade: 9-12        Length: 1 quarter          Credit: ¼

 

ART II
The student will become increasingly familiar with drawing, painting, and clay techniques as well as artistic composition, styles and art history.  Students will explore realism, abstraction, collage, water color techniques, portraits, figure drawing, clay, African American art, printmaking, mixed media illustration, mural painting and art critiques. 
Prerequisite:  Art I

BAND
Students participating in this musical organization will have had at least one year of beginning band experience. High School Band will continue the development of playing technique and general musical knowledge learned in Middle School Band class and/or private instruction.  Supplementary technique books and band music of varied musical styles and periods will be utilized both in rehearsal and public performance.  Students will also be encouraged to participate in local school district solo/ensemble contests for additional musical growth and playing experience.
Prerequisite:  Ability to read music required. One year of band experience or equal private lessons preferred.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The student will learn about digital cameras and photo composition. They will learn how to manipulate digital photographs to improve the quality of the final picture product.  They will also learn to create fun and interesting final picture products.  Each student will create a   portfolio of their photographs, notes, and class handouts. Students will also take pictures which may be used in the yearbook and newspaper.

ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The student will gain a greater understanding of the settings on their camera and how to use them to take higher quality pictures.  They will learn to increase the quality of their pictures through more technical techniques of modifying the pictures through computer software that is used by many professional photographers.  Each student will create a portfolio of their photographs and class handouts.  Students will also take pictures which may be used in the school newspaper and yearbook.
Prerequisite:  Digital Photography and teacher recommendation

DRAMA (PERFORMANCE)
The student will study the basic rules of improvisation, pantomime, characterization, voice and diction.  Performance of pantomimes, monologues and play cuttings will allow the student to demonstrate what has been learned in class.  Each student will be expected to participate in some way in the full-length play performed during the semester.

DRAMA ESSENTIALS
Students will study the structure, varieties, and history of drama. Additionally student will study the basic rules of improvisation, pantomime, characterization, voice and diction.  Drama games will encourage freedom of expression and creativity.

GRAPHICS DESIGN
The student will explore the fundamentals of design and produce their own designs using what is learned.
Prerequisite: Advanced Art, Advanced Digital Photography and teacher recommendation
Grades: 10-12        Length: 1 quarter           Credit: ¼
 
 
 
YEARBOOK
The students will learn about page and book design.  They will learn how to manipulate and transfer their creative ideas to improve the quality of the yearbook.  They will also learn to create fun and interesting page designs for section pages and the cover.
Prerequisite: Digital Photography & teacher recommendation
